Thailand welcomed Alabama-based band “Act of Congress” for performances across Thailand. I joined them in Hua Hin, Thailand where they played music from their CD as well as music composed by His Majesty the King of Thailand.

วงดนตรีจากรัฐอลาบามา Act of Congress ได้มาแสดงคอนเสิร์ตที่เมืองไทยในจังหวัดต่างๆ เมื่อสัปดาห์ที่ผ่านมา ดิฉันได้ไปดูพวกเราเล่นดนตรีที่หัวหิน พวกเขาเล่นทั้งเพลงของพวกเขาเอง และดนตรีพระราชนิพนธ์

Have you ever driven a sugar can harvester? This huge piece of agricultural machinery is a huge boon to the industry. US company John Deere is one of the legendary names on agricultural machinery. John Deere’s soon-to-be-opened USD one million dollar agricultural equipment center in Thailand’s Chainat province will provide Thai farmers with products, service and training. I visited the site and joined a seminar for cane farmers in neighboring Nakhon Sawan province. And yes, that is me driving the sugar cane harvester on display at the seminar. It is a huge piece of equipment. Mega ladder needed just to climb into the cabin. I drove under the (very) close supervision of John Deere equipment experts. And only about five feet forward and another five feet back. I’ll leave the rest to the experts!

Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer deaths in women worldwide. It is the top cause of cancer death for women in Thailand. But, if caught early, breast cancer has a nearly 100 percent survival rate. I was honored to join other female diplomats and Thai women from all sectors of society in promoting breast cancer awareness. The Queen Sirikit Center for Breast Cancer aims to raise awareness of breast cancer and improve detection. Early detection of breast cancer saves lives. Pass it on!

It’s been a big year for the US Peace Corps in Thailand. They just organized a wonderful celebration for the Peace Corps 50th anniversary in Thailand and celebrated our 5000th volunteer to serve in Thailand. This is the great team that works behind the scenes to organize, train and support our Peace Corps volunteers in Thailand.

ปีนี้เป็นปีที่ยิ่งใหญ่สำหรับกลุ่มอาสาสมัครเพื่อสันติภาพในไทยค่ะ เราเพิ่งฉลองครบรอบ 50 ปีในการทำงานในไทย และยังได้ต้อนรับอาสาสมัครคนที่ 5000 อีกด้วย พวกเขาได้ช่วยเหลือชุมชนในไทยมากมายหลายปีที่ผ่านมานี้ค่ะ

ASEAN just celebrated it’s 45th birthday. In honor of the day, Thammasat University in Bangkok held a Conference for ASEAN youth. I was honored to be one of the speakers. I talked about the US engagement with ASEAN from economics, to politics, to people. And then enjoyed answering questions from youth across the region. They asked about US engagement with Burma, US interest in the ASEAN Economic Community and US position on the claims disputes in the South China Seas. Naturally, the lively youth session ended with a photo session! This picture is with the Thai student hosts/organizers.

ประชาคมอาเซียนเพิ่งฉลองครบ 45 ปี ดิฉันได้เข้าร่วมงานเสวนาพิเศษเกี่ยวกับอาเซียนที่มหาวิทยาลัยธรรมศาสตร์และได้พูดคุยกับนักศึกษาเกี่ยวกับความสำคัญของอาเซียนทั้งในเรื่องการศึกษา เศรษฐกิจ และชุมชน นักศึกษาที่เข้าร่วมมาจากหลายประเทศในอาเซียนด้วยค่ะ ได้ถ่ายรูปร่วมกันด้วย

Google Thailand opened their office in August 2011. I stopped by recently to see how the first year of business progressed. And the answer is “fabulously”! The brightly colored office and high energy staff reflect the high octane work. In just a year, Google Thailand has helped more than 100,000 Small and Medium sized Thai businesses go on line. From building web presence to advertising, these Thai SME’s are now tapped into Thailand’s growing and vibrant on-line community. The Google Thailand staff shared some of Google’s work tenets: “You don’t have to wear a suit to be serious”; “Being great isn’t good enough”, “Do one thing really, really well”. Sounds like a great place to work!

บริษัทกูเกิ้ลได้เปิดตัวที่เมืองไทยแล้วเมื่องปี 2011 ที่ผ่านมา ดิฉันได้เข้าไปเยี่ยมชมออฟฟิซของเขาด้วย ชอบวิธีการตกแต่งแบบมีสีสันของพวกเขามากเลยค่ะ กูเกิ้ลประเ?สไทยนั้นตอนนี้กำลังช่วยธุรกิจเล็กๆ ในเมืองไทยเติบโตผ่านทางอินเทอร์เน็ต และพวกเขามีแนวคิดการทำงานที่ไม่เหมือนใครดีค่ะ อย่างเช่นว่าไม่ต้องใส่สูทก็ทำงานเก่งได้

Elephants played a vibrant role in Thailand’s past — serving as working animals to clear forests and even carrying troops into battle. Today there is less of a role for these animals. Some still work in logging but many end up street beggars with their Mahouts (caretakers). Several responsible NGOs have set up shelters to look after elderly, sick or injured elephants. I visited such a sanctuary recently and loved the care and attention these elderly, intelligent giants received.

ช้างมีบทบาทสำคัญต่อประเทศไทยในอดีต –ทำหน้าที่เป็นแรงงานหักร้างถางพงและนำทหารเข้าร่วมรบในสงคราม ทุกวันนี้ หน้าที่ของช้างได้ลดน้อยลง ช้างบางส่วนยังคงทำงานชักลากซุง แต่จำนวนไม่น้อยต้องมาเดินขอทานตามท้องถนนกับควาญช้าง เมื่อไม่นานมานี้ ดิฉันได้ไปเยี่ยมศูนย์พักพิงช้างขององค์กรเอกชนที่ดูแลช้างสูงอายุ เจ็บป่วยหรือบาดเจ็บ และชื่นชมการดูแลเอาใจใส่เพื่อนตัวยักษ์ที่เฉลียวฉลาดเหล่านี้มากค่ะ

This is my very lame effort at being a meteorologist at the new studios of ThaiPBS. Trying to link the monitors, the information and the changing screen while talking into the camera was tough.

Actually, as the face of the cameraman shows, I just couldn’t master it. I hope my interview on Thai-US relations and global issues was more successful.

It is definitely not as easy as it looks on TV! I’m talking about those who present the weather on television. All of us, no matter where we live, watch the weather. And who hasn’t thought “I could do that”?

I visited the new studios of ThaiPBS this week. Of course I saw the facilities and I sat down for an interview about Thai-US relations. Afterwards, they let me try out the weather studio.

Standing in front of a blank green screen, I had only a monitor off to my right to see the weather map. But I needed to look straight ahead and talk into the camera! Impossible. I have new admiration for the meteorologists who report the TV weather. Tough work and you have to know the details of the weather perfectly!

I’ll stick to being a diplomat.

Senior US military and defense officials visited Bangkok recently. US Army Chief of Staff Odierno met with his counterpart, General Prayut. The two talked bilateral and regional Army issues. US Deputy Secretary of Defense Carter stopped in Bangkok to meet with the Thai Defense Minister to talk global, regional and bilateral issues.
