Mothers and Daughters took center stage at lunch this week. US Embassy Bangkok asked daughters to tell us on the Embassy facebook page why their mothers were terrific. We invited those with the most “likes” to come to lunch. The five daughters and Moms were charming and impressive. The reason most of the Moms were so fabulous? They “always supported me”, “always there for me”, “taught me everything”.

Chef Medina from the USS Blue Ridge competed against the Thai Iron Chef in the popular Thai TV show “Iron Chef Thailand”.

Each chef, plus two sous chefs, had one hour to create four dishes. They learned the main ingredient only when the show started. Squid was the not-so-easy to cook main ingredient.

The USS Blue Ridge chefs feed more than 1000 sailors each day. They held a competition among their cooks to determine which cook would represent the ship on Iron Chef Thailand.

Every year the Thai and US Navies conduct training exercises together. This year, the renowned US Navy 7th Fleet band joined to play concerts for Thai audiences. They played at schools and clinics. They also offered additions free concerts at popular Bangkok Malls.

I watched their concert at trendy Terminal 21 Mall. The combination of popular movie/TV themes started us off. We all loved the Hawaii Five-0 theme. Then the band turned to Dixieland jazz. Reminded me of my student days in New Orleans. The rousing finale included “When the Saints Go Marching In” and “Tiger Rag”. I’m still tapping my toes!

Diving in an aquarium isn’t my normal dive but I visited Siam Discovery’s Ocean Park to tape a TV show on marine conservation. We wanted to educate on the importance of our oceans and the need to stop destructive practices such as shark finning and promote responsible marine conservation.

Thailand’s Ranong Province is its rainiest (rain 8 months of the year) and shares a long border with Burma.

I traveled to Ranong this week and drove an hour north of the airport through green valleys and waterfalls to reach a Malaria border screening post. With funding from USAID, this post provides free malaria screening to a large group of mainly Burmese workers who cross the river into Thailand. The post also provides well attended malaria prevention education classes.

Elsewhere in the province I talked with NGOs who work to improve health care for the large community of Burmese migrant workers as well as dedicated NGOs and Thai Government officials who work to combat human trafficking in Ranong.

Cotton USA Day 2012 in Bangkok, Thailand. One of the brightest spots in the Thai-US trade relationship is cotton. Thailand buys great quantities of US cotton and the US, in turn, buys garments Thailand designs and manufactured from that cotton. This year we celebrated the role of cotton in the Thai-US creative partnership at Cotton USA Day. The event included a fashion show of apparel made in Thailand of US cotton. The photo here is me and members of the US cotton council with the far more attractive models in the cotton clothes!

ปีนี้ เราร่วมกันเฉลิมฉลองกับ ฝ้าย ในบทบาทของหุ้นส่วนเชิงสร้างสรรค์ ไทย-สหรัฐ ในวัน Cotton USA งานประกอบไปด้วยแฟชั่นโชว์เสื้อผ้าที่ผลิตในไทยโดยใช้ฝ้ายจากอเมริกา อย่างเช่นในรูปนี้ ดิฉันและสมาชิกของ US Cotton Council ร่วมกับนายแบบและนางแบบหลายคนได้สวมชุดที่ทำมาจากผ้าฝ้ายค่ะ

The Art for Ocean project is the brainchild of a group of distinguished Thai artists who use their art to help build environmental awareness on such important topics as coral bleaching, ocean preservation and preserving rain forests. I joined the artists and school children to paint ceramic elephants. The 84 elephants, one for each year of the life of His Majesty the King of Thailand, will become an artificial reef to help marine life grow and prosper in the Thai seas. I was definitely the least talented artist involved, in fact I really have no artistic talent. Luckily, I had lots of advice and coaching from some of Thailand’s best artists.

This week Ford Thailand opened its new state-of-the-art plant. The $450 million facility will produce the Ford Focus for export across ASEAN countries. We all got a tour of the new plant, and got to talk with their high energy staff of more than 2000.

สัปดาห์นี้ บริษัท Ford แห่งประเทศไทยได้ทำการเปิดโรงงานอันทันสมัยแห่งใหม่ขึ้น โรงงานมูลค่ากว่า 450 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐนี้จะถูกใช้ในการผลิตรถยนต์ Ford Focus เพื่อส่งออกไปยังประเทศต่างๆ ในอาเซียน พวกเราได้มีโอกาสทัวร์ชมโรงงานใหม่ และพูดคุยกับพนักงานใหม่ไฟแรงกว่า 2000 คนค่ะ

During the devastating Thai floods of 2011 the United States donated immediate relief supplies to help victims as well as providing support to Thai law enforcement and military. But part of our USD 10 million flood relief package announced by Secretary of State Clinton included disaster preparedness planning to prepare for the future. Last week we formally launched two new disaster preparedness planning initiatives. Both will focus on four flood prone central Thai provinces. One program will work to build on the best practices and lessons learned by hospitals and first responders in last years floods. This program will help hospitals and first responders prepare for any future natural disasters. The second program will help local communities build plans for disaster preparedness. As friends, we were proud to help brave Thai people cope with the effects of last years awful floods. We continue to be proud to work with Thai communities to prepare for future natural disasters.

ในช่วงที่เกิดความเสียหายจากอุกภัยน้ำท่วมเมื่อปี 2011 สหรัฐอเมริกาได้บริจาคสิ่งของช่วยผู้ประสบภัยโดยทันที พร้อมกับส่งเสริมการบังคับใช้กฎหมายและกำลังทหาร แต่ส่วนหนึ่งของจำนวนเงินช่วยเหลือน้ำท่วมมูลค่า 10 ล้านดอลลาร์สหรัฐที่ประกาศโดย ท่านรัฐมนตรีว่าการกระทรวงการต่างประเทศสหรัฐ ฮิลลารี่ คลินตัน นั้นได้รวมไปถึงการ>วางแผนงานเตรียมความพร้อมเพื่อรองรับสถานการณ์ภัยพิบัติที่จะเกิดขึ้นในอนาคตด้วย

สัปดาห์ก่อน เราได้เริ่มแผนปฏิบัติการเตรียมความพร้อมในขั้นต้น 2 แผนอย่างเป็นทางการแล้วค่ะ โดยทั้งสองแผนจะมุ่งไปที่การช่วยเหลือ 4 จังหวัดในภาคกลางของไทยซึ่งมีแนวโน้มที่จะประสบภัยน้ำท่วม แผนหนึ่งสร้างมาจากแนวปฏิบัติที่ดีและบทเรียนที่ได้เรียนรู้จากอุทกภัยที่เกิดขึ้นเมื่อปีที่แล้ว เพื่อช่วยโรงพยาบาลและผู้ให้การช่วยเหลือในขั้นแรกในการเตรียมพร้อมต่อภัยธรรมชาติใดๆ ก็ตามที่อาจกิดขึ้น ส่วนแผนที่สองจะช่วยชุมชนท้องถิ่นสร้างแผนเตรียมความพร้อมในสถานการณ์ภัยพิบัติค่ะ
